I assembled it myself in 90 minutes after unpacking it. The legs could easily be stained or painted. They are solid wood with little or no finish. Add a seam ripper to your tool kit as it took 10 minutes to remove the the tags that were SEWN onto the back of this daybed with gray thread. DHP, take note: use white thread so the buyer can see that they're not pulling the daybed fabric. The hardware comes oiled to prevent rust so also have a rag available to wipe the hardware and your hands - very oily! If you are assembling alone, grab a couple shoe boxes to help stabilize as you connect sides. As always, do not tighten any screws all the way until you are ready to add the mattress slats. Even though it is step one, wait until the end to attach pads to the legs. They kept coming off as I manipulated the bed during the build (I built on carpet). This bed needs a 6-7 inch mattress to look more like a couch and less like a bed. As I stated below, my feet sit off the floor with a 10\" mattress (29\" inseam). There is no batting under the back panel fabric which assumes most will put it against a wall. A nice looking bed that was a decent price given that I had a coupon. I did a ton of research and landed on this one, and boy did I hit the jackpot. Instructions were a bit tricky when it came to attaching the sides, but it all worked out fine. Its super sturdy, the color is great, and the frame is the perfect height off the ground for me. I can store blankets and sheets under it and it works out well. I bought a 5 inch mattress (which was recommended by another reviewer...thanks for that) to make it look more like a couch than an actual bed, and it works out fine for me.
